An American Tourist in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, India
by Kathleen Lisson
Arun and I visited Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. Is it the meeting point of three seas or one? Did Kanya Devi get jilted at the altar? Did I see her footprint?
Which story do you like better? And so it goes with God.
Hat: Abigail Aldridge
Dupatta - Jayalakshmi in Trivandrum, part of a churidar set
Purse: Charming Charlie
Skirt: Finn & Clover,
tailored so I can wear it in India (I had to sew most of the slit together for modesty)
We stayed at the Seashore hotel and ate at their restaurant on the 7th floor. The food was good and the view was excellent. The hotel room looked right out onto the ocean and we saw the sun rise from our window.
Kanyakumari is not as well developed as Kovalam. There are clean hotels, but most of the oceanfront property is full of typical Indian houses. It has managed to remain a fishing village! It is quite sunny here, and the sun seems to be stronger than in Kerala. Arun bought a baseball cap and I was glad for my Abigail Aldridge hat. It is crushable, packable and the brim can be flipped up for photos and so I can wear it in the evening.
The nicest part of our holiday was walking along the street right next to the shore to visit Our Lady of Ransom church. On the walk back, we saw the fishermen working with their nets and children playing. I also liked wandering the local alleyways. Women sat together playing a game like jacks or dice.
Be forewarned - there are wild cows and goats in the streets.
