Do I Have A Hat Face?

How To Find the Best Ladies Dress Hat

What should you be thinking about when trying on a hat?

In the WWD article, 'Millinery Gets Showcase in London,' milliner Stephen Jones is quoted as saying "Ask, 'Does it make you feel how you want to feel?' rather than, 'Does it suit you?'"

This is an important distinction. I can remember the experience of trying on a hat and having a friend tell me it looked great, but knowing inside that it made me feel silly.

For me, sometimes the opposite happens. Non hat-wearing friends may think a hat looks silly, but if I absolutely love it and it makes me feel ladylike and pretty - I buy it!

  2. Ooooh I do love Stephen Jones. I'm not a great hat wearer, I'd love a nice panama but mostly I stick to beanies during the winter to keep my ears warm!

  3. I like to say and ensemble without a hat is just an outfit! I think that sometimes a hat can make or break a look. When I try on a hat it must first of all fit my head. I cant stand tight hats. Secondly I want the color to be flattering with my eyes or hair then clothing. I need different brims for different occasions:driving I need a small brim, walking I need one to shade my face, sitting on the beach I need one that wont blow off you get the idea. I just feel complete with a hat plain or fancy.

    1. Adrienne, Your system for choosing a hat sounds great. I tend to take off my hat when driving.

  4. Oh I so agree... it is how a hat makes me feel! The transporting effect of a hat... the perfect finish to an outfit... the utilitarian purpose of sun protection... I could go on and on about what hats do for me. Presently I am wading into the waters of crown wearing.... and bringing them down into mere regular mortal wear. Talk about wearing an attitude transforming piece...

  5. The title of this post put a big smile on my face, which is really fitting because that's what hats I love do as well. I just know that if I slip on a hat and start beaming, it's a total winner and that it will most likely always bring me joy.

  6. I love hats but I don't wear as many as I should! I think I think when I try on a hat about how my hair would look if I took it off...=P

    1. That IS an important concern. Fascinators on a headband are a great alternative.

  9. In my town there is an elderly lady and I cannot remember having seen her a single time without a hat! She wouldn't be "complete" without it.

Thank you for your nice comment on my blog, Kathleen.

  13. I love hats, and I'm very lucky that most of them look OK/good on me. But that means I really need to think about what else is in my closet before I purchase a hat: if I can't wear it with anything, I don't buy it.
But I agree that, besides just matching, the real reason I buy a hat is indeed because of how it makes me feel!
