By Kathleen Lisson

I has the honor of appearing as Junior League founder Mary Harriman Rumsey at last weekend's 'Famous Ladies Tea,' a fundraiser for the Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County.

I shared stories from Mary Harriman Rumsey's youth and her interest in the Settlement Movement. Preparing for this role was a great opportunity to learn more about the Junior League and Mrs. Rumsey. I felt so excited when I heard several attendees comment that they were leaving the event with a renewed interest in learning more about the women that were featured at the tea.

What a great way to celebrate National Women's History Month!

Why You Don't Look Good in Hats - Part Two

Why You Don't Look Good in Hats?

By Kathleen Lisson

Why do kids look so cute in hats? Because they LOVE wearing them!

Last year, a fellow blogger posted a few times about how much she enjoyed Carol Tuttle's 'Dressing Your Truth' program. I watched most of Carol's free videos and enjoyed reading her opinions on women and personal style.

I thought of hats when I read the email titled 'Will The Real Anne Please Stand Up.' In it, she shares photos of her daughter dressed up in each of her four types of beauty. Her daughter shares the emotions she felt when she was wearing clothes that reflected her own type of beauty as well as the three other types.

My takeaway is that Anne looks great to me in each outfit, but she feels less than comfortable in every style except her own. Read the article here: http://dressingyourtruth.com/4-types-of-anne/

When YOU Decide You Look Good in Hats, You Will Look Good In Hats

When I was in my 20's I tried on a few hats that others said I looked great in, but I just didn't feel comfortable. They just weren't 'me.'  Has this happened to you?

Luckily, I didn't decide that I looked bad in all hats, so I was open to trying on hats in my 30's and ended up finding quite a few that I liked!

I wore a plaid dress and blazer to the Polly's Cottage Christmas Party at Vanderheyden Hall. Every year, the Junior League of Troy brings presents to the girls who live at Polly's Cottage.

What to Wear to the Daughters of the American Revolution Christmas Party

Daughters of the American Revolution Christmas Party

by Kathleen Lisson

I wore my Abigail Aldridge fascinator to the Van Rensselaer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Christmas party at the Country Club of Troy.

Dress: JS Boutique Sleeveless Sequined Dress (Macys)
Necklace: Ross-Simons Amethyst & Diamond

This fascinator has certainly expanded my wardrobe - I never bought purple dresses until I found this beautiful hat at the Hat Shop in Soho, NYC. Now I have several eggplant / violet / purple ensembles! I even have a set of Amethyst jewelry to match!

Has a hat ever expanded your wardrobe?

Naturalization Ceremony in Troy, NY December 2013

Naturalization Ceremony in Troy, NY

 by Kathleen Lisson

I had the honor of participating in the December 2013 Naturalization ceremony held in Troy, NY.

Hat: David&Young
Dress: Modcloth Eiffel Power Dress in Toile
Necklace: Ross-Simons
Gloves : Vintage

Carol looks on as 57 new citizens recite the Oath of Allegiance

The Van Rensselaer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution helps celebrate our newest citizens at each Naturalization ceremony held in Troy. This time I got to hand out an American flag to the men and women as they came up to receive their citizenship certificate.

The most memorable moment for me was standing among these new citizens and listening to them recite the Pledge of Allegiance in all their lovely accents as Americans for the very first time.

My ancestors arrived on this continent in 1630 and several fought in the Revolutionary War. I am so happy to be able to witness that their sacrifices were not in vain - America is still a place where people flock to in order to seek a better life.

Retro- fascinator - What to Wear to Troy Victorian Stroll

What Hat to Wear to a Victorian Stroll

by Kathleen Lisson

I wore my white Tiane Novati fascinator to volunteer at the Junior League of Troy booth at this year's Troy Victorian Stroll.

Tiane Novati

Junior League of Troy volunteers read to children, distributed over 130 children’s books and helped boys and girls create a holiday craft. I especially liked seeing the enthusiasm on children's faces when I asked them if they would like a free book.

Books were donated by families in Troy at the Junior League of Troy book donation bins located around Troy.

Uncle Sam visited our booth!

 Fascinator: Tiane Novati
Blouse: Modcloth Madame Cutie top in white
Amethyst pin - Vintage from 1940's

What Hat and Dress to Wear to a Fall Luncheon

What Hat and Dress to Wear to Lunch

by Kathleen Lisson

I went to lunch at the Country Club of Troy with two of my fellow Daughters of the American Revolution.

I am excited to see what our chapter will learn next year - guest speakers lined up include representatives from the Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County and a young man who is campaigning to erect a statue of Revolutionary War veteran Col. Albert Pawling in Troy.

I love this Eva Franco dress, but the shoulders are just a bit too long. They are meant to go below the elbow and I always push them up, scrunching the fabric.

I like wearing a beret in fall because it covers my head but doesn't blow away in the Autumn wind like a brimmed hat would. It seems as if the wind stirs up the leaves every day in November!
